This is an instruction manual for the Singer Touch & Sew sewing machine. This was my grandmother’s sewing machine and it was given to me with the manual. I was showing it to a friend commenting on the Mary Tyler Moore Style and how few marker renderings you see these days. My friend said they believed it was a water color. We both had good arguments, but nothing was resolved and so I would love to know what other people think. Is It a marker rendering or a water color and what makes you think this way?
I like this style of image and there are in fact a number of illustrators who’ve revived this style in recent years. As far as the medium used….It looks to me like it may be a combination of marker and watercolor. Areas like the sewing machine table and the pant suit to the right have the straight, individual, parallel strokes characteristic of marker fill-ins. Usually when fields of watercolor are laid down it dries somewhat uniform with a distinct edge (unless there is some puddling) and wouldn’t dry with repetitive strokes showing. Also, the strokes in these areas all have the same width with little to no variation in thickness, which is consistent with marks made from the tip of a marker, as opposed to those made with a brush. Areas like the blonde woman’s hair (largest head) however, have the look of watercolor. Notice the ’strands’ of hair are made up of strokes which are tapered thick to thin as if applied with a brush such as a round. the strokes look like they were painted wet into dry (Wet watercolor painted over an area of dried watercolor so that the strokes don’t blend or bleed into the underlying color.) Also, if you look closely in the area of the hair, there are slightly darker dots, possibly indicating where pigment puddled together as the watercolor dried. You can also see a bit of texture, the slightly ’speckled’ look revealing the tooth of the paper which usually reveals itself when watercolor is applied. Soooo……..I think you’re both right. The type of medium used in the illustration is most likely watercolor as it was the style used at that time, easy to have colors at hand and washes of color for shadow effect and so on.
I love the style of illustration then, as it made you think of light and the reflection it creates.
